Creative Brain

Today’s theme: Creative Overwhelm (the good kind).

Over the past 6 weeks, I’ve experienced the overwhelm associated with a family member’s life-changing illness, coupled with the overwhelm of seasonal doldrums. Good news is, all that is shifting.

Mid-December finds me humming along in creative overwhelm. Characters and story ideas begin to wake me around 4-4:30 am. They are SO NOISY, like wood spoons hitting the bottoms of metal pots, ‘tho they do try to present themselves as precious bits of celestial fluff floating into my consciousness

Today–like most every other day–I was up by 5:30 am. Made a mug of coffee, made a cozy blanket nest on my couch and opened my story idea files. This weekend’s project is to create my 2019 Writing & Publishing Goals.

I have so many, maybe too many, ideas. Which begs the question: How do I write faster AND more efficiently from this place of overwhelm?

  • Acknowledge, again + again, that I have ADD. Some days ADD works for me, some days it rips me apart + plunks the pieces of me in a place I call ‘Analysis Paralysis’. Ugh.
  • Treat the ADD. I first started taking Ritalin to help with the brain fog of perimenopause. Lo and behold, my savior was born. Small doses give me 4 hours of focused writing time, and I take days off.
  • Put myself in a place without distractions, like my writing cabin, where the emphasis is on WRITING, not cooking or socializing or admiring my captivating felines.
  • Plug in the laptop + tune out the world. And watch the word count rise.
  • Self-care. Overwhelm, when it goes unacknowledged, unaddressed, + untreated, leads to me spinning out (or, spinning in). Writing cabin, soft shawls, hot drinks, familiar beloved things help me center + help calm my nervous system. I need to let myself know everything is okay.

Here are the stories topping my list:

  • Magic Reclaimed (in my editor’s hands right now, eep!)
  • Magic Redeemed (book #3 of the Calliope Jones novels. Words are flowing.)
  • Magic Restrained (a novelette from the MAGIC family focusing on 2 characters you’ll meet in book #2)
  • Belle de Boskoop’s spinoff series. Basically, she wants to solve mysteries. And fall in love.
  • Another series, based on magic-blessed sisters who inherit a fabric shop.

So, that’s *my* creative life. I’m off to get it organized!
